Introduction to Domain Names - What is a Domain?
|
|
Domain names are aplha-numeric names that allow us to remember websites on the Internet.
In the past, a website was accessed by an IP address ( e.g. 202.124.246.20). This is hard for people to remember and a website may change it's IP address multiple times during its lifetime.
These days that IP address is represented by a domain name and hence is alot easier to remember and understand. We type a domain name in the URL of our browser to access specific websites.
Each domain name has a suffix - an extension which indicates what top level domain (TLD) that domain belongs to. For example, mybusinessonline.com.au belongs to the .com TLD , which in turn belongs to the .au Country TLD.
Domain names are allowed to have letters, digits, and hyphens. No other characters may be used in a domain name. Domain names are also not case sensitive
